Being true to yourself can be challenging. It takes belief in oneself, and a commitment to working on continually improving our perspective and eliminated the negative self talk.
In his new book “The Overwhelmed Brain” author Paul Colaianni guides the reader through a series of stories and exercises that are designed to to stop our self-sabotaging behaviors and replace them with self compassion. Paul states that “honoring others over yourself is like dishonoring yourself”. Compassion starts on the inside, and when you have enough of it for yourself, only then can you spread it out into the world for others.
“The Overwhelmed Brain” is about ways to look at yourself with the benefit of improving your relationships with others. Paul encourages us to not always think that the other person needs changing, usually it is our attitude and belief that need to be changed. Once we alter our beliefs, we can change our feeling and emotions about the other person. This is a formula for successful relationships. Always look at what you can change to improve your relationship with another person that is difficult to get along with.

Bill Jensen is a returning guest to Inside Personal Growth. This time he joins me to discuss a book he published sometime ago called The Simplicity Survival Handbook. Simplicity is something that we all need a bit more of in our lives. We have become more inundated with complexity in our world as a result of the speed of transmission of information, and the devices that keep us tethered every minute. We are spending more time on email, distracted by social media not to mention that the devices are “always on” which leads to us being so distracted that we are not paying attention to our most important relationship–our family.
Simplicity is the power to do less (of what does not matter), simplicity is the power to do more (of what does matter), states Jensen. I first met Richard Barrett about 15 years ago at a workshop that he was conducting in San Francisco. I was intrigued to attend the workshop, for the topic was about “Liberating the Corporate Soul“. Richard and I have maintained our friendship since our first meeting, and I have followed his evolution and the numerous books he has written over the years since our meeting.
In our interview for this podcast we are focusing on his newly released book entitled ” A New Psychology of Human Wellbeing–An Exploration of the Influences of Ego-Soul Dynamics on Mental and Physical Health.” Richard did a tremendous amount of research to write this book, but the content is well presented and is very useful in understanding the dynamics of our soul and ego.
Richard references the four dimensions of our souls energetic awareness. They are body, mind, science and psychology. “Your soul is a field of conscious awareness that identifies with your energy field. Is is who you are. You don’t have a soul, you are a soul. Your soul and the soul of every other human being is an individuated aspect of the universal energy field from which everything in our physical world arises, states Richard”. Richard was inspired to write this book as a result of reading “Toward a Psychology of Being” by Abraham Maslow.

There is no doubt that the emotional clutter that we hang on to takes it’s toll on us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I recently interviewed Donald Altman the author of a new book entitled ” Clearing Emotional Clutter-Mindfulness Practices for Letting Go of What’s Blocking Your Fulfillment and Transformation, and we discussed how emotional clutter affects or habits and behaviors negatively.
Donald presents mindfulness practices that are designed to allow us to clear the clutter by managing our brains which he asserts everyone of us can do. He calls it a mindful lifestyle reboot which is centered around six clutter clearing skills which are assessed through the acronym PAIR UP: Present Moment Participation, Attuned Acceptance, Intentionality, Reflection, Understanding of Suffering and Purposeful Partnership.
Donald show the readers throughout the book how to use these skills to become more centered and to live in the moment. I had the pleasure of speaking with Keith Rollag about his book “What to do When You’re New.” Keith’s book gives great techniques and key strategies to help you become more comfortable, confident, and successful in new situations. If you get nervous and anxious in new situations whether its starting a new job or moving into a new neighborhood Keith Rollag will take you through steps and practices to make you more comfortable and eventually being able to teach others what to do when they’re new.
Keith Rollag is a professor at Babson College, a small private school just outside of Boston that specializes in entrepreneurial leadership. He first realized the challenges that come with being new when he moved to Japan for a previous employer. Over the past twenty years he has interviewed lots of newcomers, asked some to keep diaries of their experiences, and conducted surveys in several organizations.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Camille Sweeney and Josh Gosfield the authors of a new book entitled “The Art of Doing-How Superachievers Do What They Do and How They Do It So Well“. In my interview with the authors we explore some of the thirty-six superachievers they profiled in the book. We also explore the characteristics that superachievers have in common, and the reasons for their success.
I asked questions about actress Laura Linney, Cesar Millan and Tony Hsien the founder of Zappos. All of them has shared core principles and practices. While all of their stories are different, the principles and practices are very similar.
I am going to list the practices/principles articulated by the authors, for I believe this is paramount to understanding what makes each of them tic. First, they all have extreme dedication to what they profession. Second, they have what the authors refer to as intelligent persistence. Third, they rely on a community of support. Fourth, they possess great listening skills. Fifth, they are all great storytellers. Sixth, they have a keen ability to test their ideas to determine if they are viable. Seventh, they know how to manage their emotions. Eight, they are always evolving their skills and abilities. Ninth, they are patient and last they have an attitude of happiness.
The authors have articulated the takeaways from each of the thirty-six superachievers, “The Art of Doing” is a great book with wonderful stories and insights into how the super achievers think and act. I don’t know of a soul living that has not had an issue with clutter in their life. This could be physical or mental clutter, and we are all looking for ways to organize and reduce the amount of stuff and or thoughts that are preventing us from living a life of freedom. I know “Getting Clutter Free for Life (The Weekend)” has particular importance for me because I am needing to do a cleanse of my home for soon I will be making a move.
In my interview with author Cary David Richards about his new book “Get Clutter Free for Life (The Weekend) we discuss the psychological issues associated to attachment to our stuff, and ways to systematically release our stuff. As Cary states the basis of this book is about learning how to live in the moment and being present, and it is challenging to accomplish this free state of being when the energy around you is stifling our creativity and freedom of expression.
Cary has a great way to approach getting rid of our clutter and stuff, he recommends categorizing (ie: clothes, electronics, furniture, pictures etc.) and dealing with one item at a time. Cary suggests that you take all the clothes out of your closet not just deal with one closet at a time, this approach allows you to inventory the items, and put them into the discard, give away, or keep pile. He recommends doing this for all the categories of items you own, for this allows for an entire house cleaning, and it will accomplish it quickly. Cary also states to do this process quickly, not drag it on for months and months–prolonging this de-cluttering process give you opportunities for excuses to keep stuff you should eliminate. Cary does not like to refer to himself as a minimalist, but it certainly sounds like he leads a life of freedom from clutter and stuff which is the minimalist way.
