I had the pleasure of speaking with Keith Rollag about his book “What to do When You’re New.” Keith’s book gives great techniques and key strategies to help you become more comfortable, confident, and successful in new situations. If you get nervous and anxious in new situations whether its starting a new job or moving into a new neighborhood Keith Rollag will take you through steps and practices to make you more comfortable and eventually being able to teach others what to do when they’re new.
Keith Rollag is a professor at Babson College, a small private school just outside of Boston that specializes in entrepreneurial leadership. He first realized the challenges that come with being new when he moved to Japan for a previous employer. Over the past twenty years he has interviewed lots of newcomers, asked some to keep diaries of their experiences, and conducted surveys in several organizations.

It is seldom that I come across a book that is packed full of insight, wisdom and real world applications. I had the honor of conducting an interview with Rebecca Costa the author of ” The Watchman’s Rattle-Thinking Our Way Out of Extinction“, about her new groundbreaking book.
Rebecca states that many of our current world problems are due to the accelerating complexity which outpaces the rate at which the human brain can function and develop new capabilities. If you feel that our world is moving at breakneck speed and you are not able to keep up with the pace, you are not alone. In the “Watchman’s Rattle” Rebecca cites civilizations such as and Mayan, Khmer and Roman empires which fell and became extinct due to trying to find quick fixes to their problems. Drought, food shortages, war, population growth as all factors that we face today, and will require that we think our way out of extinction. Biological capabilities–the genetic features of each human organism–represent the only common denominator in every civilization and therefore, must necessarily play a role in every civilization’s outcome. Evolution can not be left out of the conversation, ” The Watchman’s Rattle” the the book that allows for us to have this dialogue and understand our challenges, and hopefully come to a way out of extinction.
Rebecca cites what she refers to as supermemes which are beliefs that have transferred from generation to generation and are at the foundation of the challenges we are facing as a civilization today. Everything from irrational opposition to extreme economics, Rebecca and I discuss these supermemes in our interview together.

How many of you have had an opportunity to speak before a group of people and wished you could have conveyed your message in a more compelling way? I know that this has happened to my several times, and while I have known about the impact a good storyteller can make on an audience I never felt that I was very proficient at the storytelling process.
In my interview with my friend and author Karen Dietz, we discuss her new book entitled “Business Storytelling for Dummies“. We explore some of the mistakes that many of us make in developing our story as well as practices for organizing a great story. So just what is a story as defined by the authors : ” A story provides packets of sensory language presented in a particular way that allows the listeners to quickly and easily internalize the material, comprehend it, and create meaning from it.” Easier said than done, right!!
I must say that “Business Storytelling for Dummies” is very well organized, and provides the reader with an opportunity to explore, understand and practice new skills in storytelling. It takes the reader through a step by step process in developing their story no matter what the circumstance. If you are interested in developing new business opportunities, working on sales and meeting presentations or improving customer service within your organization, then learning how to organize and tell a great story will improve your odds of getting your point across and with excitement, engagement and interest by your audience.
