My guest Pilar Gerasimo is a phenomenal woman on a quest to help heal and create healthy people throughout the world. Her new book “The Healthy Deviant-A Rule Breaker’s Guide to Being Healthy in an Unhealthy World” is a very unique approach to overall health and wellness.
The premise of the book is that as individuals of this western world we are caught in the Vicious Cycle of an Unhealthy Default Reality.
It works like this, the unhealthy default reality presents us with a version of “normal life” that makes unhealthy patterns, attitudes and choices easy, automatic, seemingly cheap, and socially acceptable (while making healthy choices difficult, inconvenient, comparatively expensive, and weird.)
We adopt the Unhealthy Default Patterns, choices (conventional ideals, nutrient-poor processed foods, sedentary work, and play, inadequate sleep, weak social connections, passive consumption of media, and little to no time in nature, etc.)
So these choices become automatic which leads to an Unhealthy Default Reality of problems and solutions, then with repeated efforts we try/fail attempts, leading to self-blame/shame and inadequacy, chronic ego depletion, diminished capacity, then increased vulnerability/reactivity leading to overwhelm, desperation, and the victim mindset…and the cycle of the unhealthy default patterns continue.
