Podcast 167: Happiness At Work with Srikumar Rao Ph.D

Srikumar RaoIt is always a pleasure to speak with Professor Srikumar Rao. I had the honor of interviewing him previously for his book entitled, “Are You Ready to Succeed“.

On this podcast we will be discussing his new book entitled, “Happiness at Work-Be Resilient,Motivated, and Successful–No Matter What“.  In my preparation for my interview I took the opportunity to watch Srikumar’s TED video, which proved to be a real gift of amazing wisdom.

He states that the more you want something, that the wanting of that thing does not bring you more happiness.  To add insult to injury, whatever you get you can un-get.

Happiness as defined by Srikumar is this deep sense of well being no matter what happens to us.  It is the fact that as human beings we are predisposed to happiness, and it is more the way we perceive our circumstances and events in our life that creates our happiness or unhappiness as it my be.

Some simple recommended things one can do to create and sustain happiness in their lives.

  • Greet each day with a sense of purpose.
  • Commit intensely-and joyfully–to everything you do.
  • Stop defining your life with “good” or “bad” labels.
  • Create your own miracles–no matter what life throws at you.
  • Attract positive people, energy and actions into your life.

Srikumar mentions that we create mental models, and it is the models we have created that determine how the world works for us.

We create hundreds if not thousands of mental models.  For example, you might you believe that the way to get ahead is to work hard, come to the office early and stay late, take the initiatives and do projects that aren’t really part of your duties, try to be noticed favorably by your boss and her boss, and constantly study so that you’re always abreast of your field and growing professionally.

The question is are your existing mental models serving you positively?  Do they create more happiness in your life?  In “Happiness At Work” you will be provided with exercises and practices to assist you in shifting your mental models.  Easy simple ways of transitioning your existing mental models to help you in creating more happiness in your life.

If you are seeking more happiness at home or work, then I would recommend that you read Srikumar’s book and practice the exercises that he has provided in each of the chapters.  You can also learn more about his work by visiting his website by clicking here.

Please enjoy this wonderful interview with a truly happy man, Srikumar Rao.
