It is very serendipitous that the publisher sent me a book titled “Skinny Liver“.  I was recently diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease also referred to as (NAFLD).  I obviously was really interested in the topic and what author Kristin Kirkpatrick had to say about the symptoms, treatment and nutrition programs to combat the disease.

What is ironic is that NAFLD’s symptoms are not something that you usually feel.  As Kristin stated the disease is the silent epidemic.  Over 30% of the American population have the disease and many probably don’t even know they have NAFLD.   It can be detected through a liver blood panel where they measure AST/ALT.  Both of these are great indicators of types of liver disease or damage.

Here are just a few factoids about your liver: 1) 96% water. 2) It is the one of the largest organs. 3) It produces bile for digestion 4) It helps you resist infections. 5) It stores and releases glucose. 5) It produces cholesterol. 6) It is responsible for regular blood clotting. 7) It clears the blood of drugs.  Needless to say it is one of the most important organs in our body.

In my interview with Kristin we discuss in depth the NAFLD disease, what causes it and how to change your diet and exercise program to help in reversing the disease.  NAFLD has connections to other diseases as well such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and many others.  I highly recommend that you listen to our interview and listen to Kristin about how to treat and hopefully reverse the disease.

We are all aware of the aging baby boomer population–thousands are turning 65 every day, and the numbers of the aging is not going to diminish.  The sad statistic is that a hugh portion of this population has the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.  People’s cognitive abilities are diminishing at alarming rates, and it has been proven that this can be reversed by our diet.

In my interview with nutritionist Maggie Moon and the author of a new book entitled ” The Mind Diet” we discuss the food to eat and the foods to avoid to help prevent from early onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. You will not be surprised to learn that a good portion of the diet is green leafy vegetables and fruits and nuts.   That is not to say you can not eat fish, chicken and meat but in much smaller portions that the American diet consumes this protein today.

The Mind Diet has been proven to reduce hypertension and heart disease as well.   During our interview Maggie discussed the correct food groups and the foods to avoid.  We also get into the menus and recipes that she recommends.

I hope you enjoy this wonderful interview with an expert in the Mind Diet.

It seems as if in North America 90% of the population is either on a diet or considering some new fangled solution to shed those extra pounds.  Is it more exercise and less calories as we have been told for years.  It is less carbohydrates and more protein.  Regardless of the strategy you are using according to my Yuri Elkaim the author of a new book entitled “The All-Day Fat-Burning Diet” we need to reset our bodies metabolism.

Yes, we have heard this advice before as well, but not in conjunction with what Yuri refers to as a 5 day food cycling formula which includes one day of fasting.  In Yuri’s book he discusses what he refers to as “Fat Triggers”.

Fat Trigger #1: Allergenic Foods that Cause Inflammation.  What are they usually they are dairy and gluten, Yuri say that everyone that eliminates these foods from their diet will see a change in their waistline.

Fat Trigger#2: A Sedentary Lifestyle and Exercise Extremism.  Keep your body moving, but not too much.  In other words exercise is very important for your overall bodies health, but excessive exercise is unnecessary and can have adverse effects.

Fat Trigger #3 Toxins.  Toxins have an inverse relationship with thyroid hormone function, so as levels of toxins in the body go up, levels of biologically active thyroid hormone, T3, go down.

Fat Trigger #4: Deadly Belly Bugs.  Your gut health is the biggest determining factor of your overall health.  Microorganisms communicate with your immune system to help keep you healthy.  Dysbiosis, is the imbalance of good to bad bacteria–this is a big problem in today’s excessively celan, sugar-laden and antibiotic happy world.

Fat Trigger #5: Sugar Overload.  Sugar makes you fat because it’s quickly broken down and its glucose component spikes your blood sugar.  As a result, insulin is released to remove all the excess sugar from the blood, and it’s stored in your muscles, liver, and fat cells.

Fat Trigger #6: Too Much “Frankenfood”.  Much of our ultimate behavior has to do with dopamine centers in the brain.  Dopamine is a neurotransmitter intimately involved with rewards which leads us to choose the wrong foods that are high in fat and calories but with little nutritional value.

I am certain that almost everyone listening to this podcast is interested in better health and nutrition.  So what makes the approach that Dallas & Melissa Hartwig authors of the new book ” Whole 30”  so much different that all the other diet & nutrition programs?

In my interview with Dallas Hartwig we explore how “Whole30” transforms your life.  It is not a diet program or even a quick fix for that matter.  The “Whole 30″ program has been carefully designed to change the food you eat, and find out which foods are causing you health challenges.

Dallas and Melissa are focused on good nutrition, detoxing and only having you eat food that work for you.  The physical benefits of the Whole30 are profound, 96% of the participants lose weight and improve their body composition without counting or restricting calories.  Dallas recommends not stepping on the scale everyday to measure your weight , instead he focuses on how you feel and how you clothes fit as an indicator of success.

Our country is filled with food related disease from high blood pressure to diabetes and most if not all of the conditions can be eliminated through better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction.   One of the major causes of theses diseases is inflammation, as Dallas states it is like being a little bit sick all the time.  Your food choices can rectify almost all of the associated inflammation,  and related illnesses so choose wisely.

I trust you will find my interview with author Dallas Hartwig insightful and filled with useful guidance toward better health.  I recommend you check out the Whole30 website by clicking here, and also visit the Whole30 Facebook page by clicking here.

I happen to be watching the documentary ” Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead #2″ by Joe Cross.  If you have not seen this documentary it is certainly worth watching, and learning about the life changing steps that Joe Cross took to get himself and thousands of others back to health and vitality.

As a result of watching Joe’s documentary I payed particular attention to an interview he conducted with Brian Wansink from Cornell’s Food and Brand Lab.  I was fascinated by how Brain was focused on how the change in our surroundings and environment can have a significant impact on our health and nutrition, so I reached out to him to do an interview for Inside Personal Growth.

In this interview with Brian Wansink, Ph.D. you will learn how simply it is to reconstruct and rethink your environments for success in your food consumption. Brian says that the answer isn’t to tell people what to do: it is to set up their living environments so that they will naturally lose weight.   He says we need to work with human nature not against it, and that willpower is a very challenging way to shift our eating patterns for success, and he proves it in his new book “Slim By Design“.

During our dialogue together we discuss some very simple techniques that you can employ in you home, the restaurants you eat in, your grocery store, your workplace and at your children’s school.   You will learn how to create a mindless solution for your eating habits, that will work and allow you to shed the unwanted pounds.   This is not to state that you can only change your environment for success, you still need to exercise and learn what foods are healthy for you, but this factor is a key to a healthy lifestyle  change in what you eat and how much weight you might be able to lose.

I hope you enjoy this upbeat and lively interview with a fascinating man and scientist, Brian Wansink, Ph.D. If you want to learn more about “Slim By Design” or his other books please click here to be directed to his website.

Heather ReedEveryone today is focused on wellness, and it is a topic that deserves a lot of focus and attention.  I had the pleasure of interviewing both Dr. Matt Mumber and Heather Reed about their new book entitled “Sustainable Wellness-An Integrative Approach to Transform Your Mind, Body and Spirit.”.   I must state that Matt and Heathers approaching to achieving sustainable wellness uses an integrative medicine approach which if followed properly will certainly help one achieve sustainable wellness with lasting results.

I found their  analogy of using the three legged stool a great way to explain how they both approach the topic of wellness.  If you can imagine a three legged stool with the seat being spirituality , and the three legs physical activity, nutrition, and stress management all feeding into our spirituality.   The stool rests on awareness, which is the foundation of where all wellness begins.   This provides a great visual of the integrative approach that both Matt and Heather take when working with their clients to achieve truly lasting wellness.

Achieving sustainable wellness begins with reflection and exploration.  In the book you will find many opportunities where  Matt and Heather  provide the reader with questions for reflection and thought.  They have also have created and an eight (8) steps process to follow in exploring your personal wellness RX.  Those steps include mindfulness, know thyself, life review and planning, nutrition, physical activity, stress management, spirituality, bringing it all together.  If you follow these steps and practice the wisdom that the authors have outlined in “Sustainable Wellness” you will most likely  achieve a new level of health and vitality for yourself.
